Upper GI

We get it. Surgery is a big decision, but sometimes it’s the right one.

So you’ve been referred to Dr Balalis for surgery, but it’s not related to weight loss? You’re still in the right hands.

In addition to his passion for supporting people on their weight loss journeys, Dr Balalis is a multi-faceted surgeon, having trained extensively nationally and internationally with several world-renowned surgeons.

His surgical specialties include upper gastrointestinal surgery. An area in which he holds a Masters Degree (in Oesophageal Cancer), frequently publishes peer-reviewed journals and actively extends field research to support and assist the Australian surgical community.

Upper GI issues include any problem of the oesophagus or stomach. Common upper GI conditions include gastro-oesophageal reflux, hiatus hernias, cancer, achalasia and other motility disorders.

Dr Balalis provides a holistic and complete upper GI service that extends beyond surgery and includes endoscopic options (including Overstitch procedures), pH and manometry testing, and highly specialised ongoing advice on lifestyle modifications and other factors.

Hiatus Hernia and Acid Reflux

A hiatus hernia is when your stomach bulges through your diaphragm. A larger hiatus hernia can cause acid reflux, as well as heartburn and even a twisting of your stomach (volvulus).
