Accessing Superannuation for Weight-Loss Surgery

For some patients, accessing superannuation to fund their weight loss surgery is the best option.

Early Release of Superannuation funds for Weight Loss Surgery may be your best option if you qualify for this. Uninsured patients can access their superannuation to cover costs associated with surgery under what is called ‘Compassionate Medical Grounds’.  Insured patients may also access their superannuation for out of pocket expense (‘gap’) payments.

In order to be eligible, you must meet the criteria set by the ATO, specifically as it relates to requiring medical treatment to treat a life threatening illness.

What does accessing superannuation for weight loss surgery require?

  • A report supporting your claim – completed by Dr George Balalis
  • A report supporting your claim – completed by your usual GP.

If accessing your superannuation, you can discuss this at your initial consultation.

As part of your application, you will be provided with a fee estimate and we will assist you with sourcing additional quotes to support your application (such as hospital, anaesthetist and assistant quotes).

We can discuss this process with you and assist with all of the requirements.  Your application can then be completed via your MyGov account.

If you are considering accessing superannuation, we encourage you to explore the ATO requirements, and if eligible contact your superannuation fund to ensure you have adequate funds.

Please contact us if you require further information or to set an appointment.
